Periodontal Disease: Symptoms, Treatment & Prevention

In the initial stages of gum disease, also known as gingivitis, it causes the gums to become red, swollen and irritated. During the late stages of the disease, known as Periodontitis, bacteria affects the tissues surrounding the teeth. Gum bleeds easily when your teeth are not routinely brushed and flossed.

Preventing Periodontal Disease

Gum disease treatment will be treated depending on the severity of your condition. Mild cases of the disease can be eliminated with good oral hygiene and regular visits to your dentist. Cleaning your teeth twice a day using fluoride toothpaste and flossing at least once will help to remove a lot of plaque and food particles, as recommended by the American Dental Association. What if you still get periodontal disease even with regular cleanings?

Periodontal disease can contribute to other health problems. Many researchers are studying the possible connection between gum disease and genetic factors including alcohol and cigarette smoking. Gum disease puts you at higher risk for heart disease and stroke that is caused by blocked arteries. People with poorly controlled diabetes are more susceptible of developing gum disease. It may cause lung infections or worsen existing lung conditions leading to severe pneumonia. Certain medications are known to cause this disease. Pregnancy may lead to gum disease and premature births in some women.

Treating Periodontal Disease

More severe cases will require surgical intervention. Advanced treatment typically begins with a deep cleaning procedure called Scaling and Root Planing. Laser Periodontal Therapy will eliminate any tartar and bacteria formed below the gumline with shorter treatment times. The gums will be sutured back and will effectively reattach themselves to the teeth. After surgery, the diseased gum tissues will be healed and fit more comfortably over your teeth. Laser technology is very precise and can be used to maintain the healthy parts of the teeth while removing cavities. Laser gum therapy will minimize bleeding and swelling of gums, and reduce discomfort, and the need for more invasive therapies.

Gum Disease Treatment

If you need gum treatment, contact your periodontist who will check for any signs of gum disease. The periodontist may recommend preventive gum treatments to stave off the disease. Depending on your condition our dental specialists can recommend various treatments to help restore the health of your entire mouth. With good oral hygiene practices and regular appointments for professional cleanings and exams, you can lower the risk of the periodontal disease progressing into a serious problem!
